First of all and the most important and time-consuming-work is removing the old seals. Focus on clean, clean, clean. Clean the old residue from the door channels, mirror cushion area, door hinge area and anywhere else you are replacing the seals. The finest adhesive in the world will not adhere to that sticky, gooey residue that was once a quality light seal. Proper installation will give you thousands of light tight exposures.

About Gray

As a veteran attending National Camera's resident camera repair school in 1979, is where I found my true calling for the demanding yet extremely interesting field of photo equipment service and sales. For 25 years we grew every year. The staff and I serviced tens of thousands of film camera items, trained many technicians, met thousands of wonderful customers and truly had a fantastic time. Within 2 years of 2004, my service experience was devalued somewhat by the internet, film camera sales/service flatlined. Camera stores 50 times larger than mine were closing. I could see a new opportunity on the Internet. USCamera started as information site then became a family run internet business. Our mission remains the same, • Specialize in Vintage film equipment, mostly after 1958 • Knowledgeable • Provide quality products • Superior Service • Always available via phone - contact form – email All of us at USCamera look forward to serving you. kudos to you guys for doing such a wonderful job,

I saw someone from your company mention that some people use yarn in place of seals for these Mamiya roll film backs
my background is in hydraulics and I’ve been wondering if it wouldn’t be practical to use an O-ring of the correct durometer and that should fit in just beautifully and stay put… no temperature rise or abrasion considerations would make it even better.
What do you think of that?

    1. Gray says:

A wool type blend was used in some early cameras. It is a glue down material and is not as clean of an install as foam. The camera engineers have used foam since the ‘60s. Unfortunately, the Mamiya backs are designed to compress at most 2mm foam for a light tight seal. I do not how you would keep an 1-2mm “O” ring in place on that back. Also, any resistance when closing the back may spring it or stress the hinge over time.
