The most important and time consuming work is removing the old seals. Focus on clean, clean, clean. Clean the old residue from the door channels, mirror cushion area, door hinge area and anywhere else you are replacing the seals. The finest adhesive in the world will not adhere to that sticky, gooey residue that was once a quality light seal. Proper installation will give you thousands of light tight exposures.

General Installation Guidelines

I have several YashicaMats from different years.  I have research on serial numbers and will put that information here sometime in the future.

Many of the older Yashica cameras use wool/yarn type material in the back cover channels.

Most of the newest 124G models use foam in all the door channels.   I have an older 124G with a meter and that model year used the wool/yarn material in the left/right door channels and foam in the hinge and latch channels.

Very nice all of the film chamber light seal channels are very close to the same width.

You can start the installation with any seal you want first and continue to work in one direction. I also recommend to dry fit the channel you are installing before removing the backing.

About Gray

As a veteran attending National Camera's resident camera repair school in 1979, is where I found my true calling for the demanding yet extremely interesting field of photo equipment service and sales. For 25 years we grew every year. The staff and I serviced tens of thousands of film camera items, trained many technicians, met thousands of wonderful customers and truly had a fantastic time. Within 2 years of 2004, my service experience was devalued somewhat by the internet, film camera sales/service flatlined. Camera stores 50 times larger than mine were closing. I could see a new opportunity on the Internet. USCamera started as information site then became a family run internet business. Our mission remains the same, • Specialize in Vintage film equipment, mostly after 1958 • Knowledgeable • Provide quality products • Superior Service • Always available via phone - contact form – email All of us at USCamera look forward to serving you.
