Installation Help-Multi-Controller Button EOS 1 D MKIII 1DS MKII 5D MKIII

At the request of our customers, we supply both styles of Multi-Controller button and button covers separately.

If the Multi-Controller Button switch is broken off, read no further. You will need to replace the back cover assembly. The switch is not available separately from the back cover PCB and the back cover PCB is not sold separately from the back cover assembly.

Our comments and statements made customers before this post

  • USCamera – In our opinion, the back cover must be removed for proper replacement of both styles of button covers and the new style multi-controller button.
  • Customers have told us they limited success when installing the new style button without removing the back cover. Limited means more than half of the attempts resulted in the broken toggle switch shaft.
  • When installing the old style button, you just push the old style button on the toggle switch shaft and there you go. The friction of the button fitting on the shaft and the adhesive used keeps the button in place.
  • USCamera – I little adhesive is good. When I first removed the MC button from a new back cover, there was evidence of some black silicone. So it appears silicone what Canon is using when I looked. Canon has since designed a new button.
  • USCamera – When installing a New style button without removing the back cover. The real challenge is to get the top part of the button cover into the groove around the bottom part on the replacement MC button.
  • Customer –  have found it easiest to carefully guide the lip of the button cover into the channel on the controller button with a flat toothpick as you are pushing it into place. Use whatever you want as a tool however anything sharp or pointed metal can damage the thin button cover material.
  • USCamera – If either type of button cover is damaged you will sacrifice some water resistance to the switch and back cover PCB.

Tech Tip: If installing the old style MC button, see how the replacement button fits on the switch shaft before applying any adhesive.

About Gray

As a veteran attending National Camera's resident camera repair school in 1979, is where I found my true calling for the demanding yet extremely interesting field of photo equipment service and sales. For 25 years we grew every year. The staff and I serviced tens of thousands of film camera items, trained many technicians, met thousands of wonderful customers and truly had a fantastic time. Within 2 years of 2004, my service experience was devalued somewhat by the internet, film camera sales/service flatlined. Camera stores 50 times larger than mine were closing. I could see a new opportunity on the Internet. USCamera started as information site then became a family run internet business. Our mission remains the same, • Specialize in Vintage film equipment, mostly after 1958 • Knowledgeable • Provide quality products • Superior Service • Always available via phone - contact form – email All of us at USCamera look forward to serving you.
