First of all, the most important and time-consuming work is removing the old seals. Focus on clean, clean, clean. Clean the old residue from the door channels, mirror cushion area, door hinge area and anywhere else you are replacing the seals. The finest adhesive in the world will not adhere to that sticky, gooey residue that was once a quality light seal. Furthermore, proper installation will give you thousands of light tight exposures.

About Gray

As a veteran attending National Camera's resident camera repair school in 1979, is where I found my true calling for the demanding yet extremely interesting field of photo equipment service and sales. For 25 years we grew every year. The staff and I serviced tens of thousands of film camera items, trained many technicians, met thousands of wonderful customers and truly had a fantastic time. Within 2 years of 2004, my service experience was devalued somewhat by the internet, film camera sales/service flatlined. Camera stores 50 times larger than mine were closing. I could see a new opportunity on the Internet. USCamera started as information site then became a family run internet business. Our mission remains the same, • Specialize in Vintage film equipment, mostly after 1958 • Knowledgeable • Provide quality products • Superior Service • Always available via phone - contact form – email All of us at USCamera look forward to serving you. Hello Gray,
The light seal foam on the camera I just purchased had already deteriorated to a point that it became tar and got all over the focus screen. I’m sure you know on the Pentax ME Super that replacing the screen is a major job getting the screen from a donor camera and installing it in the good camera.
I was able to do a fairly good job using 3M Specialty Adhesive Remover just cleaning it in place. Looks about 99% clean which I can live with. The solvent is very expensive but it apparently did no damage to the plastic screen. I normally use it to remove adhesive from plastic boat cover windows after sewing (my boat cover business). Just for your information because you mentioned you didn’t know of any solvent that could work.

That is very interesting! I will get some of that chemistry and try it on some focusing screens I have, then post the findings here. I would really like to talk to you about how you cleaned the screen without disassembly of the viewfinder Give me a call anytime. Gray
